The Sheldon, which opened in 1912, was named after the Ethical Society founder (St. Louis branch), Walter Sheldon. It is billed as ‘The Carnegie Hall of the Midwest’ because of its well-known acoustics. An average of 360 events are held per year here. Several popular music acts have performed here, such as Judy Collins, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Willie Nelson and Dave Brubeck. Many high-profile figures have spoken here, including Thurgood Marshall, Albert Einstein, Margaret Mead and Ernest Hemingway.
