1903 Pestalozzi, St. Louis, MO, 63118 / Cake artist: Screwed Arts Collective
Call it weird, surprising, fun, whatever….the Venice Cafe has plenty of art all over! Located in the Benton Park neighborhood and not far from the Anheuser-Busch Brewery and Gus’ Pretzels, the bar celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014. It began as a coffeehouse and became a pub for the poetry reading scene in St. Louis. Still staying true to its roots, it has also become a place for live music from local bands. Venice Cafe is well-noted for its outdoor patio and of course, its imaginative decor.
Cake placement date: February 25
Where is the cake now?: The cake sat outside the cafe until June 2020 when it was posted to cake artist Peat Wolleager’s social media page that he will repurpose the cake. (June 2020)
Notes: In July 2014, the cafe closed temporarily after it was burglarized; around this time they temporarily stopped selling food.
This cake was ‘the one’ that broke the most rules! It was instructed to all artists not to cut into the cake, but the Screwed Arts Collective did it anyway. It is to believed to make it look like brain surgery, among other things!
