Between Kiener Plaza and Ballpark Village sits this historic site where a hotel currently sits. There was a battle that was fought 16 years after the city of St. Louis’ founding, in 1780. Fort San Carlos was a Spanish fortification. On May 26, 1780, was the historic battle between the British and St. Louis residents, in which the British lost. Whites and slaves both fought against them. 21 lives were lost as 300+ people fought. This was an American Revolution battle. The Fort San Carlos Society commemorates the event every year by reading the names of the 21 people who lost their lives.
