The Christ Church Cathedral organization dates back to 1819, which makes it the first Episcopal congregation west of the Mississippi River. The church was built between 1856 and 1867, and it opened Christmas Day in 1867. On September 19, 1901, the City of St. Louis gathered inside the Cathedral as the nation observed silence during the funeral of President William McKinley. The main body of the church is made of sandstone from Illinois. Gargoyles are placed at the barfly tower, adding to its Gothic style. The cathedral has free tours on weekdays.
