One of the most prominent family attractions in St. Louis is the Saint Louis Zoo, also known as Saint Louis Zoological Park. It is one of the few free zoos left in the United States, as donors and organizations continue to keep it thriving. The zoo was started after the 1904 World’s Fair when the city of St. Louis decided to keep a ‘Flight Cage’, which was a walk-through bird cage featured at the Fair. It is home to more than 18,000 animals, some of them on the endangered list. 700 species are exhibited here, and most are represented from several different parts of the world.

The zoo is located in the southern, central part of Forest Park, with the South entrance not far from I-64. While it is free, other fees (parking and some special exhibits and shows) may apply.
